Traditional Braces

Bracket and wire braces have been used for decades to straighten teeth and move the bite into its ideal alignment. This process is relatively simple. A skilled orthodontist attaches metal brackets to the front surfaces of teeth. Then, wires are used to connect the brackets. When the wires are adjusted, pressure is placed on the bracket and transferred to the tooth. This pressure shifts the part of the tooth above the gums into alignment, and then, the root system shifts to match the crown. Below the gum line, the supportive alveolar bone and gum tissue are also redistributed over time to hold the tooth in the new position. Because the alveolar bone and gum tissue need time to attach and anchor the tooth in its ideal location, patients need to wear a retainer to maintain proper alignment as the supportive structures slowly reshape.

Invisalign Orthodontics

Like traditional braces, the Invisalign system uses pressure to shift teeth into their ideal position. Rather than metal brackets and wires, Invisalign treatment is completed using a series of clear, plastic alignment trays to shift teeth. Each set of aligners represents the patient’s smile one step closer to their desired end result. When worn for about two weeks, these aligners place pressure on teeth, and they shift to fit this new position. Then, patients exchange their current aligners for the next set in the series. The entire process is typically completed in about twelve months with a few, short checkup appointments to ensure the smile is progressing according to plan.
